Film noir began in the 1940s and continued as a dominant cinema genre until the 1950s. The direct translation for 'Film Noir' is litterelly 'Black Film'. This is due to its overall dark and shadowy mise-en-scene, this implies a highly negative mood. Films of this genre typicly centre around a journalist or private investegator, with a mystery to solve.

The first film to berecognized as Film Boir was "Stranger on the Third Floor". It featured what was, at the time, new cinematic techniques that included dark lighting and generally dark themes.
